Navigating the Waters of Niche Recruitment

By: Haripriya Venkatachalapathy

With a very focused job space and an even more focused candidate pool, it is important for recruiters in a niche industry such as digital healthcare to know how to identify valuable candidates and match them with the right job. Narrowing and focusing the target pool helps the hiring pipeline flow more smoothly, but broadening the parameters of a search adds new blood. Learning how to attract and target the right candidates takes a lot of practice and experience but these tips will definitely make it easier to thrive in digital healthcare recruitment:

Be specific

Use very specific words and vocabulary related to the industry in every single interaction or posting that will reach potential candidates. If the candidate can understand the terminology and can communicate with ease, it is a good sign that this is a candidate worth attracting.

Grow and learn constantly

As a recruiter, you will constantly have to study and grow your knowledge and experience to keep up with the changing demands of the industry. Study the trends in the healthcare industry and repeatedly practice recruitment tactics and strategies to keep improving. Change is inevitable but a successful recruiter knows that triumph comes with growth and the willingness to keep learning.

Network

It’s always a good idea to meet as many successful people as possible who do the same thing as you. Sharing and learning from others’ experience is invaluable and can teach you a lot without having to navigate similar scenarios on your own, with no advice to fall back on. Attending and participating in digital healthcare conferences or joining an organization of recruiters in this niche space will help you connect with other recruiters and give you multiple opportunities to interact with new potential clients, thus expanding your candidate pool.

Use your own experience

Chances are you have undertaken job searches yourself. Take the experience you gained during your last job in the digital health space and apply it to your current recruitment strategies. A good demonstration of such personal understanding will help the hiring managers and candidates relate to you better. Candidates always appreciate transparency and candor from recruiters and will be less likely to be nervous or closed-off during phone calls and interviews during the hiring process.

Make use of job boards

Understand where the majority of your candidate pool congregates and go there. Most job seekers trawl popular job boards for postings which might be difficult to come by in a specialized and focused industry like digital healthcare. Taking to popular job boards such as LinkedIn, Indeed and Glassdoor and posting jobs on these sites will increase the exposure of job openings and attract a new wave of job seekers. Remember, a very focused and specific job description on these sites will draw the right candidates and will make the hiring process more effective than casting a wide net and hoping the right candidates find their way in.

Even if you are new to niche recruiting and digital health and have limited experience, keeping these tips in mind while sourcing and identifying candidates will result in a targeted talent pool with all the right candidates worth pursuing. Good luck and happy recruiting!
